RolePlaying Basics
1) RolePlaying (RPing) is like you're in a play. You are a character.
2) You do not post - I walked in and said hi to Renee - That isn't right, unless your character is talking. You write in third person form, and in a story format.
3) You are a part of the whole picture, not a different picture entirely. You must post your part into the story and have it making sense with the rest of the other posts. It's like a game of Ad-lib, Add-a-sentence, Rigmarole, whatever.
4) Unless you're the first person to post, there's usually some others who've done some of the RPing already. Read their posts, get the general idea of what to do.
5) You only post about YOUR character's doings in the RPG. You cannot control what other characters do, unless it's VERY minor and doesn't affect anything. To control what another character does is called POWER-PLAYING. This is a no-no.
6) When you wish to talk normally, and not in your character, you should have ooc: whatever you want to say. This is established so you don't get people confused about whether it's you or your character talking. When you become your character again, you have ic: whatever. In MAC, there are plenty of boards that you can talk normally in, but no ooc: necessary.
7) Practice the actual RPing! It may be a bit awkward at first, but it gets more comfortable when you get the hang of it. There's no better help at doing better RPing than actually doing the RPing and learning.
